Run, don’t walk, over to algoriddim.net and grab djay, their free MP3 DJ’ing app for Mac OS X. It integrates into your iTunes playlist (though it doesn’t play DRM’d files – so be aware of that), it allows Audio Units for effects (and essentially supports AUNetReceive to allow input via Bonjour, so you can send audio to it using GarageBand and AUNetSend). It’s also got all kinds of neat tools like pitch/speed shifting, scratching. and grabbing artwork for the mp3s too.
I’ve just played with it a little bit, and I’m convinced it’s awesome.

I’m going to start writing some GarageBand related articles, since it’s pretty much my primary music tool these days.
Here’s a quick one to start. I have a longer one about how to run GB in Rosetta to take advantage of PPC AudioUnits on an Intel Mac, but it’ll have to wait…
One annoyance I have with GB is that there’s no clear way I see to create a Software Instrument region other than recording MIDI or Musical Typing. Kinda lame. Maybe I just want to start drawing notes? One thing you can do is create a little one-measure region with a single note in it, and name it “template region”. From there, select “Add to Loop Library” from the Edit menu. Set appropriate settings to it (I used “other instrument”) and save it. Now go to your loop browser, and search for “template”. Your one-note loop should show up (along with Pop Contemplate Drums if you have Jam Pack 2). Click on “Fav” for your loop, and it will show up in the Favorites “Smart loop list” in the loop browser.
You may also want to do something similar for drum parts (such as say, making a loop with just the bass drum doing “the fours”) to speed up composition time on your drum loops.

Ok, I’m going to start kinda documenting what’s going on with the radio show again. Posts will go here, and eventually, I’m going to do some kind of XSLT on the RSS feed to turn it into a “real looking web page” on pressthebutton.com
What did we hear?
-A group called “Kangaroo Kourt” doing a collage called “Atmospheric Distortions”
-A remix of Senator Ted Stevens yammering on about “tubes”
-Cary Grant singing about Station Identification
-Artists from the Centre for Composition of Music Iannis Xenakis
-Footage from the Ingenuity Festival.
-Call-ins from random people: geometrists, people in bands we haven’t heard of, others.
Update: links have been added. At some point, Widget will have an account here to add her contributions to the show posts (and whatever else she wants).
