Glacial Communications

We were out of town on the 29th, so Sade wolfkitten of "Black Light Temple" (off the air this summer, but will be saturday night/sunday morning midnight-2am) filled in for us.

The theme of the night was "Fast Food".

First we get iLife ‘08 and iWork ‘08, and now we get the Prophet ‘08 (WANT.)

I assume in a few years, the somethingorother ‘10 will be coming out in May 2009.

This was a remixed version of the show from February 21st, in honor of the late Tony Wilson. Started out as an abject failure (complete with dead air!), since the WRUW studio was having minor tech issues and I had to completely rethink how I was going to do everything...

This syndication thing is still acting a little weird, but we're getting closer. This show ended up being dual-themed. The first hour was "annoying-ass starlets" - more Lindsay Lohan and Paris Hilton than any sane person would actually want to listen to. After that drove us nuts, the second hour was "livestock". Cows, pigs, and sheep (and let me tell you, that sheep is SCARY!). Don't make a connection between the two hours. Or maybe you can. I'm not taking a position.

iLife ‘08 was finally released today. This includes what should have been GarageBand 4, which seems to now be called GarageBand ‘08. This was probably done to sync up the version numbers of all the iLife components – GB and iWeb being behind the others.

Let’s see how my wishlist from January panned out:

• Multiple projects open: doesn’t look like it. Not 100% sure, though.
• Automation: YES!
• PPC workaround: Probably never coming. apulSoft is making progress on his ports collection (c’mon, daHornet!). SSL- Get to work on the LMC-1. I need those “In the Air Tonight” drums…
• QC-style effect builder: Rendered moot by SonicBirth going OSS.
• Asteroid: HAHAHAHA!

That said, It’s also got some other nice features listed: Visual EQ and Multi-take recording sound very nice, as does 24-bit recording. (note to self: stock up on external HDs…)

Now to find the $79 for it in the couch cushions…

Yesterday should have been the first occurrence of the automatic PTB podcast post on this site. Instead it turned into a comedy of errors that only resolved itself by, as far as I’m concerned, magic.

It started with my changing the cron time to something before midnight (my hosting is on the west coast, so the MP3 should be ready at wruw.org by 2:58am Eastern…), but I didn’t change the day of the week. Oops. ssh in, fix the crontab, and run the job by hand. OK, it ran, but where’s the post? Repeatedly try refreshing the feed. Nothing seems to happen.

Another fine feature I attempted to add was to change the pubDate tags in the XML to make the RSS feed validate (Month Day, Year isn’t good enough). My change actually broke the feed syndication’s parser, rendering the date to sometime in 1969, thus sticking the post at the bottom of time. Ugh! Decide validation can wait and change script back to Month Day, Year.

Login, change the date on the post to something reasonable. Still not showing correctly. WTF? Watch logs. Try various things. Nothing works. Decide using Typo for the new GIS site I’m messing around with’s blog was a good idea.

See something odd pass by in the logs. Something about wp-cron that was triggered by someone else’s visit to the site. Reload page. Hey! My edited post is now on top!

Now let’s see what happens next week…
