Mixer arrived today. Seems to work, though output seems low, but I’ve only used the RCA ins, not the 1/4″’s, which ought to be a bit louder, having some kinda mic pre in them…
I think I may bring some additional toys as well – like the Atari Punk Console I whipped up this summer (perhaps disguised as a Geiger Counter?), and since it looks like there will at least be a little power available, even the Juno-1.

This was another test of my battery-powered performance rig. After about an hour, it sort of morphed into a remixing of The KLF's Chill Out.

hrm, it’s now Tuesday, and if I want my mixer before I head out to Recycled Rainbow, it needs to be here by Thursday. Payment was sent over a week ago, but I’ve heard nothing back from the seller. I hope I don’t have to get something at Banjo Center. eeek.

Since it was International Talk like a Pirate Day, the night's theme was "Pirates and Monkeys", since Pirates are often found with monkeys (ok, not so much historically, but as John Ford said, "Print The Legend").

No, not the actual end of the world, but rather the latest Recycled Rainbow event. My main focus has been on a mobile, self-contained (and entirely portably-powered) live performance rig. I’ve been working on this conceptually since the springtime – initially in preparation for Burning Man, but that venture went belly-up so now it’s going to be for RR.
The kit contains the following:
- Boss DR-202 Drum machine
- Yamaha QY-10 sequencer
- Palm Tungsten E w/SD card for samples
- Realistic mixer (hopefully enroute and working, and should arrive before 9/28, otherwise I’m screwed)
- an old pair of Koss computer speakers that can run on 4 C cells
All of this stuff comfortably fits in an old laptop bag. There may even be room for a smallish MIDI controller that can be hacked to run on batteries, in case chords seem like a good idea.

Looks like Apple shipped Logic Studio 8 and Logic Express 8.
Some quick notes:
- price drop? – looks like Express is now $199 (I think it was $299 before), and studio seems lower than it was before.
- Soundtrack Pro 2 is now in Studio – this may be the single best new feature.
- Five of the Garageband Jam Packs are now included in Studio
- full ESX24 sampler in Express
- Some kind of performance mode in Studio
I’m personally curious to know what the educational pricing is (I qualify due to my day job) – Express for $99? We can only hope
Update: looks like Academic Express is $179 and Academic Studio is $449.

This week's show was a technology test of what I'm calling Band-In-A-Bag: A self-contained performance system. It wasn't strictly the self-contained version - I'm still using a powered mixer, and wall power for most of the instruments. I also wasn't using the "PA" included with the system. I also used an extra synth not part of the base system. It wasn't a bad test. Needs some more work, though.
