Well, I guess it’s now February, so it’s time for the RPM Challenge(my 5th). My plan isn’t so much to do an album as much as it is to do the second half of a double album. I’m going to finish the x0xb0x double CD (title: Acetic) that’s been in progress for a bit. Disc one is a compilation of various tracks I’ve done since building the x0xb0x, and disc two will be a selection of all-new tracks. The official release date will be March 3rd, but I figure on having tracks (and maybe digital downloads?) completed by the 29th so that I can have some discs burned by the 3rd. CD edition will be in a custom case in an edition of 25 or 30. I may start trickling out tracks for streaming on Bandcamp over the course of the month, so keep your eye out there or on the twitter feed.

Somewhere in the middle of all this recording, I think I’m going to try to submit something for this, and I have three shows planned for this month- February 9th and 24th at bela dubby, and a return to the Grog Shop on the 15th with The Hexadecimals. New material for the double CD will be getting played at these shows.

Going to be busy for the next four weeks!

As mentioned in the paragraph above, my first show of 2012 is happening Friday at bela dubby. Should get going around 9pm. I’m even hearing a rumour that it’ll be webcast for those out of town or unwilling to leave their homes.

More special projects in the works, but I’ll talk about those later…

Fun times this weekend, with the official debut performance of ‘PyroGlacial’ (a collaboration with Pyrosonic) on Saturday, and opening for OS OVNI and DJ sets from Textbeak and FUNERALS on Sunday.

Live-wise, a few performances are still lined up for the rest of this year(Dec. 26th at Pat’s<del datetime="2011-12-13T19:41:47+00:00">, and Dec. 28th on WCSB-FM</del>postponed, stay tuned) and a few already next year, but I think I’ll be turning down any additional shows in January and maybe February. If something really interesting comes along I’ll give consideration to any opportunities presented, but I’ve got some projects coming up that are going to take a lot of my time between now and February:

GLAC-27 (the debut EP by Béton Translucide) is very, very close to done. Mixing is something like 75% complete. Tapes by the Dec. 26th show? It’s looking possible.

I’ve gotten a number of inquiries about the split tape series, and if everyone who has contacted me so far submits something, these should be two killer splits(currently assigned catalog numbers GLAC-28&29).

GLAC-30 will be a third split, featuring myself and another artist to be announced soon. My side may well be along these lines.

GLAC-20 and GLAC-25 are making slow progress. On a positive note, I finally found a “lost” 4-track tape that I wanted to mix down for -20, so that’s a positive. The scope of -25 has gotten really big (two full CDs + a limited edition mix + a sort of performance art project/road trip), and may well be a box set if the scope creeps any further .

There’s another project I’m about to start on soon(which is likely the primary focus in the short term), but I don’t want to give too much information on it just yet. It’ll be properly announced when it’s ready.

I’ll leave you with this: Go see the show at Pat’s on December 26th. There will be more synths in there than you can shake a stick at- Inner Spaced (i.e. Telecult Powers+John Elliot of Emeralds/Outer Space), a Fragments/Fluxmonkey collab(!!!), Moth Cock, your humble narrator glacial23, and maybe one more act. UFOs will be seen!

Still working on this synthpop-ish C20, but once it’s done, I’d like to put out a couple of short run split C30s (maybe 25 copies each at most) early next year. Anyone down to put out 15 minutes of “danceable” electronic music? If you’re interested, send an email with a link to a demo to glacialcommunications@gmail.com or hit up my SoundCloud dropbox. If we like what we hear, we’ll let you know. I’m pretty sure I know who one of the acts is going to be already (it’s a new project that hasn’t recorded or released anything yet).

Those two short run splits are going to be followed by another, bigger pro-duped split C20 or C30. More details on that closer to release-time.

Also, I seem to have a bit of extraneous gear that I’m not using, so in order to clear some of it out, I present The First Periodic Glacial Communications Garage Sale. Here’s the first round of deals:

<del datetime="2011-11-30T23:01:44+00:00">Alesis MMT-8 MIDI Sequencer. Includes manual. $30</del>SOLD

Boss DR-202 Drum Machine/Sequencer. I think I have a printed manual somewhere. $60

Kawai R-50 Drum Machine- just got it as part of a package deal and don’t really need it. No manual. $25

Danelectro Distortion pedal-never used, still in the box. $10

Danelectro Metal Distortion pedal-never used, still in the box. $10

Alesis Metavox Vocoder. Includes manual. $50

JVC belt-drive turntable. Sometimes plays a little weird. $20

(Sears?) belt-drive turntable. I never really used it. $20

Nothing includes a power adapter. If you really want me to provide one, I probably can for extra money.
All prices are pretty negotiable, and interesting trades will be considered. I’d prefer Cleveland-area pickups/meetups at shows, but if you want something shipped, we’ll work out some sort of arrangement.

Crazy busy so far this month. Played two shows so far (Nov. 6, opening for CLAPS and Kiernan Paradise, and Nov. 12th at the inaugural show (CAVE FEST) at the new and improved Rubber City Noise RCNCAVE). I’ve also made a second batch of contact mics for WCSB’s Radiothon last week, and am contemplating a third for general sale next year.

So, what’s on the horizon, recording-wise:

GLAC-27 (title/artist TBA): a C20 of synthpop-ish stuff, some of which I’ve been playing out lately. Hopefully ready by December 11th? Two tracks are pretty much ready to go.

GLAC-25 (glacial23: Acetic): What started as a simple compendium of x0xb0x acid tracks is now shaping up to be something much bigger- a 2 CD set with disc one being the aforementioned compendium and disc 2 being a live-in-the-studio jam. There may also be a super-limited mix collection of Ohio-connected acid tracks and a road trip along the length of OH-303. More details when it’s closer to release (at the current rate, maybe 3/03/2012 )

GLAC-20 (‘The messed of’)- A collection of assorted odd things in the vault. When it’s ready, it’ll be ready. Until then, it’s not ready.

Live-wise, there are three for-sure shows coming up (Nov. 26th, at the 71st Door, Dec. 11th at bela dubby, and Dec. 26th at Pat’s in the Flats), and maybe one in planning stages (more info when I know anything more). If my math is correct, one more beyond that and I’ll be at 24 shows this year- triple my rather meager goal of equaling what I did in 2010. I’ve also got my first booking for 2012, but it’s not until April- I’ll be writing some more about that closer to the event.

OK, my earlier hopes of GLAC-27 coming out any time soon are pretty much dashed. It’ll happen, but the October time frame is pretty much not happening. However, once that’s done, GLAC-25 (an all acid tracks compilation titled ‘Acetic’) should be coming out soon thereafter. It’s about 70% done already, since it’s a collection- just need to make three or four more tracks for it.

There are still a couple of unclaimed Aquacade/Rhyolite cassettes available, so grip ‘em while you still have a chance.

Upcoming live stuff:

-October 12th, bela dubby – with Spacedog, Fragments and fluxmonkey, and Moth Cock.

Recording: GLAC-26 is pretty much available in the wild now. Two are purchased, four are more-or-less on hold for folks, and four are still available for the gripping (as well as an unlimited quantity of downloads). It was a long march to get it released in the last couple of weeks, as it turned out a) the tape deck I planned to use had a non-functional input, and b) once I got a replacement deck, the tapes I had planned to use were of an incredibly low quality, and refused to record at a reasonable speed. Luckily I had recently purchased some good-quality C20s, and was able to make this a case of putting both tracks on each side, versus the original one track per side planned.

My earlier estimation of an October 9th release of the next tape (GLAC-27) may be a little premature, as it will now be a full C20 instead of a C10. We’ll see what happens. After that is (likely) a split C30 (GLAC-28), but that’s really early in the planning phases.

Live: Played an incredibly anarchic set at Sunday’s Audio/Visual Baptism show pretty much just using my 4-track as an instrument. I had all sorts of feedback issues and just decided to roll with them at some point. Messy, but fun.

I’ll be playing tomorrow, September 14th at bela dubby in Lakewood, along with Michael James (who did a killer drone set at AVB), and Michael Collins (formerly of Prince Rama, but now living in the Cleveland area) and maybe one more performer. I’ll also be doing various and sundry things at Recycled Rainbow next week- as of right now, the only confirmed happening is some sort of performance in conjunction with Eric Alleman.

GLAC-26: Aquacade/Rhyolite. The cassette, in an edition of ten, has two tracks: Aquacade, and predictably enough, Rhyolite. The planned release date is 9/10/11, because it seemed like a good idea at the time and I like dates with patterns to them. The digital download (which is included with purchase of the cassette, and I’ll give you a code if you buy the cassette at a show or whatever) includes both tracks, as well as some rough versions of the tracks, which in Rhyolite’s case is quite different.

As of right now, I’m planning on having a couple of the cassettes available at the A/V/B show on September 11 (likely the only live show I’m playing this month), so a few are being held in reserve for that, and whatever isn’t sold by then will be available then as well.

Maybe the second C10 (already cataloged as GLAC-27) will be ready by October 9th, so it can be 9/10/11 for Europeans and confuse everyone.

Three shows have happened since the last post- one at SPACES Gallery on May 25th, a house show at “The Rock Hall, Agharta Branch” May 7th, and bela dubby on July 23rd. I’ll be playing again on August 11th and August 27th, both at bela dubby, and doing a piece that will involve tape in some form at the Audio Visual Baptism event at Now That’s Class on September 11. Rumors of more performances in the October time frame have been heard, but nothing’s set in stone yet.

Parallax and Live at the Grog Shop are now available as a single CD-R, called “22/24″. Available via either of those Bandcamp links or at select shows.

Debating a name change for dancier/poppier material vs. the noisy experimental stuff. Thought I had a good one lined up, but apparently another local band is using one of the words for their name. Due to this, the August 11th show is just plain booked under my name, which is kind of weird. Stay tuned.

A pair of C10s are in the works. As soon as I’ve got material and packaging ready, they’ll make their way into the world. There are further release plans, but these things take time…

Why do these things take time? Well, among other things I took the opportunity after the last show to clean & reorganize the studio space. Once the studio is set up “right”, hopefully material will flow a little better. That’s the theory, anyway.

Hey, look- new look on the website. Probably not permanent. Also started a page for documenting live appearances.
